Golden Gate Estates man accused of disguising stolen machines faces grand theft charge

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla .– A Golden Gate Estates man who allegedly refused to pay construction equipment rental fees faces charges of theft and false reporting, officials said.

William Dodd, 42, is accused of failing to pay rental companies for the heavy machinery he leased from them, deputies from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office said. When the companies took back their equipment, Dodd called the CCSO to report the theft of the machines.

CCSO detectives thought Dodd’s story was suspicious, so they investigated it.

Detectives eventually found a crawler loader in a wooded area where Dodd was working. They also spoke to witnesses who said they saw Dodd use the machine long after reporting it as stolen.

Dodd is accused of painting the machine a different color and removing the serial numbers, but detectives were still able to confirm that it was the crawler loader he had reported as stolen.

Dodd was already in the Collier County Jail on unrelated charges Tuesday when detectives added the charges of theft and false reporting.

If you’ve seen Dodd owning a Toro stump grinder or Wacker Neuson crawler loader in the past few months, call 239-252-9300. If you would prefer to remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-8477.
