PP Control & Automation, which employs over 230 people at its state-of-the-art West Midlands plant, will assemble the EDM generator module that forms the heart of Winbro Group Technologies’ new HSD-351 model. A new production cell staffed by eight PP C&A experts has been put in place to complete construction, with work on the first 25 units due to begin shortly for use in drilling holes in aero and industrial gas turbine blades complexes and nozzle guide vanes.

It’s a mutually beneficial relationship that spans a decade and ten different model variants, with the decision to outsource continuing to provide production “flexibility”, reduced assembly time and improved supply chain management for the Leicestershire-based company.

Tony Hague, CEO of PP C&A, commented: “If you want to write a book on strategic manufacturing outsourcing and how it works, I’d like to think this relationship would be in the case studies section. Working with a company that has been operating in such a demanding field for ten years is quite an achievement and we are delighted to enter our ‘Testimonial Year’ with a new machine tool to help them build. »

He continued, “The HSD-351 is an EDM machine that packs so much power into so little space and we were instrumental in producing the heartbeat of the model – the EDM generator module.”

Manufacturers are increasingly looking to deliver more productivity via a square meter of space in their shop, which is why Winbro Group Technologies decided to develop and launch the HSD-351 system.

With a footprint of just 2.5m2, it is the most productive EDM drill in the world, says the company. It has a capacity of nearly 700 electrodes, across a range of diameters, providing unprecedented machining capability. It will respond to a strategy of drilling the maximum number of correct pieces for the first time in a square meter and features the company’s usual technology and performance.

Gary Robinson, Vice President of Sourcing at Winbro Group Technologies, echoed the story: “The HSD-351 proves that a small footprint can also be powerful, delivering more performance than our previous best-of-breed model. category. At the heart of this capability is the EDM generator module, which is assembled and built at PP Control & Automation to ensure we get the same repeatable quality in every unit.

“This machine really illustrates the strength of our relationship…it’s critical for the business. Together we sat down and reviewed the design for the manufacture of the generator and, using the expertise of both companies, we were able to come up with a faster and more efficient assembly process. He continued: “It also has the advantage of being fully UL 508A approved for the US market, which we now take for granted after working with PP Control & Automation for so long.”

Engineers at PP C&A’s world-class fabrication and assembly plant are just starting the first of 25 units over the next twelve months, with design for fabrication helping to reduce assembly time.

In a world where supply chain disruptions are commonplace, PP Control & Automation also manages the complete generator BOM and uses its purchasing power to secure hard-to-reach electrical components.

Gary concluded: “Historically, we have enjoyed the challenge of keeping every element of manufacturing in-house, an approach that does not always produce optimal results. Instead, we chose to focus on our core competencies and then looked to outsource assembly parts that other companies were well qualified to handle for us. It was perhaps the best decision we have ever made, and in PP C&A we now have a strategic partner who provides us with world-class quality and delivery performance tied to the ability to scale or reduce volumes according to demand.
